What Are Light Up Letter Lights and How Do They Work?

November 3, 2026

Quick Answer: Light up letter lights are letters with rows of bulbs set inside a metal or plastic frame. Small ones sit on a shelf and run on batteries. Event-size marquee letters stand 4 or 7 feet tall, plug into a standard outlet, and use bright LED bulbs that light up a whole room.

Light up letter lights are letters built with bulbs inside them, so the shape of each letter glows. You have probably seen tiny versions on a bedroom shelf and giant versions behind a wedding sweetheart table. Both work the same basic way, but the size, power, and brightness change everything about where you can use them.

At My Big Letters, we have lit up hundreds of events across Tennessee since 2023, with more than 250 installations so far. This guide explains how letter lights work, how the small and giant versions differ, and how to tell which kind your event needs.

What Are Light Up Letter Lights?

Light up letter lights are letters, numbers, or symbols with bulbs mounted along the shape so the whole character glows. Most people also call them marquee letters, because the style comes from old theater marquee signs with rows of round bulbs.

You will find two very different products under the same name:

  • Decor letter lights: small plastic or metal letters, usually under a foot tall, sold for home decor, nurseries, and dorm rooms.
  • Event marquee letters: full-size letters that stand 4 or 7 feet tall, built from metal, and rented for weddings, birthdays, proposals, and corporate events.

The small ones make a nice shelf accent. The large ones become the backdrop for every photo at your event. Knowing which one you need saves you from buying a set that disappears in a big room.

How Do Light Up Letters Work?

Light up letters work by running power through a string of bulbs set into the face of each letter. The bulbs sit in holes drilled along the letter’s shape, and wiring behind the face connects them in a single circuit. When the letter gets power, every bulb lights at once and the letter glows.

Here is what is inside a typical event-size light up letter:

  • The frame: a metal channel shaped like the letter, with an open face so the bulbs show.
  • The bulbs: round globe bulbs spaced evenly along the shape. Modern letters use LED bulbs, which run cool and use far less power than old incandescent bulbs.
  • The wiring: a hidden circuit behind the face that links every bulb.
  • The power cord: a cord that runs from the back of the letter to an outlet.

Metal frames hold up best for events. As the sign maker White Clouds explains in its guide to the different types of marquee letters, metal letters are durable and designed to hold light bulbs or LED lights, while wood and acrylic letters suit lighter decor uses.

Are Light Up Letters Battery Powered or Plug In?

Small decor letter lights usually run on batteries, while full-size event marquee letters plug into a standard wall outlet. Batteries can only push enough power for a few small bulbs, so a battery letter gives off a soft glow that works on a shelf but fades in a large room.

Our 4ft and 7ft letters are full-size wired displays that plug into standard power outlets. Smaller setups typically need one outlet, while larger setups may need access to multiple circuits, depending on how many letters you spell. We bring the extension cords and setup equipment with every rental. If your spot has no power, such as an open field or a barn without outlets, we can bring a generator for an additional fee.

How Big Are Light Up Letters for Events?

Event light up letters usually come in two sizes, 4 feet and 7 feet tall. The size you choose depends on your room and how many letters you want to spell.

  • 7ft letters: about seven feet tall, four feet wide, and two feet deep. They stand taller than most guests, so they work best in ballrooms, barns, lawns, and on stages. Plan about five feet of floor space per letter.
  • 4ft letters: four feet tall and about 3.3 feet wide. They fit smaller venues and longer phrases, and they can stack two rows high to add height.

Our 7ft marquee letter rentals give you the biggest statement for large spaces, and our 4ft marquee letter rentals fit tighter layouts or longer names. For safety, the 7ft letters do not stack. We also offer 1ft toppers like “MR & MRS” or “THE” that sit above either size.

Can Light Up Letters Change Color?

Yes, light up letters can change color if they use colored or color-changing bulbs. Standard marquee letters glow with soft white LED bulbs, which give the classic warm marquee look that photographs well.

For a themed event, we offer colored bulbs as an add-on, including red, blue, green, orange, pink, purple, and white. Our 4ft letters can also use color-changing bulbs. See how each color looks in our post on choosing colored light bulbs for marquee letters.

Should You Buy or Rent Light Up Letter Lights?

Buy small decor letter lights if you want a permanent shelf piece, and rent event-size letters if you need a display for one celebration. Full-size marquee letters are heavy, need a truck to move, and take careful setup, so most hosts rent them for the day.

Renting from My Big Letters includes delivery, professional setup, and pickup. Our crew places the letters, runs the cords, and brings backup bulbs. You never lift a letter, store a letter, or worry about a burned-out bulb during your event.

Frequently Asked Questions About Light Up Letter Lights

Do light up letters get hot?

LED light up letters stay cool to the touch during normal use. LED bulbs turn most of their power into light instead of heat, which is why event companies use them instead of old incandescent bulbs.

Can light up letters be used outside?

Yes, light up letters can be used outside as long as the weather is safe. We do not set up in heavy rain, strong winds, or unsafe conditions, so we always recommend an indoor backup plan.

Can I add balloons or flowers to light up letters?

Yes, with approval. Our letters have built-in lips on the back that work well for attaching balloons with trigger clamps. Adhesives cannot go directly on the letters, since they damage the finish.

How far in advance should I book light up letters?

Try to book 4 to 6 weeks ahead, especially during busy wedding and event seasons. Last-minute bookings may still work if your date is open.
