Pairing balloon garlands with marquee letters is one of our favorite ways to turn a simple display into a full event backdrop.
The letters give you the height, light and focal point, while the balloons bring in color and help tie the display into the rest of the event. We use this combination for everything from birthdays and baby showers to weddings, school events and corporate setups. Our marquee letter rentals in Nashville can be paired with balloon décor to create a setup that fits the event, venue and overall look.
The biggest thing to get right is scale. A balloon garland that looks great around one 4ft number can look completely different next to a row of 7ft letters.
Here’s what we look at when we’re planning the two together.

Balloon Garlands with Marquee Letters: Why This Combo Works So Well
Balloon decorations add color, texture and fullness around bright marquee bulbs, whether you’re working with 4-foot numbers for a birthday party or 7-foot letters anchoring a wedding reception.
What we like most about balloons is how much they can change the feel of the letters without taking away from them.
A simple white marquee display can look completely different once you add school colors, a wedding palette or a mix of birthday colors around it.
With our 4ft numbers and letters, balloons can help make a smaller setup feel more complete. With our 7ft letters, we usually use the balloons more as an accent because the letters are already such a large focal point on their own.
Balloon garlands work well for weddings, birthdays, baby showers, school events and corporate events. Balloon arches can also be used when the space and setup call for something larger.
Think of a bold balloon arrangement around “30” for a milestone birthday, neutral balloons framing “OH BABY” at a baby shower or school-color balloons paired with marquee letters for prom or graduation.
The goal isn’t to cover the letters.
We still want you to see the bulbs and the shape of each letter. The balloons should frame the display and make everything feel like it belongs together.
A lot of our balloon work is done in-house by My Big Letters, especially when we’re already handling the marquee-letter setup. For larger or more specialized balloon installations, we also work with experienced balloon professionals we trust.
That lets us keep the letters and balloons planned as one display while bringing in extra help when the scale or design calls for it.
Our team handles delivery, professional setup and pickup so you don’t have to transport the letters or assemble the display yourself.

What Size Balloon Garland or Balloon Arches Do You Need Around Your Letters?
There isn’t one balloon-garland size that works for every display.
Balloon garland sizing for marquee letters depends on how many letters you’re using, whether they’re 4-foot or 7-foot, the venue and how much of the display you actually want the balloons to frame.
When we’re planning a garland, we usually start with the phrase or numbers first.
A single 4ft birthday number needs a completely different amount of balloon coverage than a longer row of letters. With our 7ft letters, we also have to think about the total height of the display before adding balloons above or around them.
Balloon garlands can be customized with different colors, balloon sizes and shapes, so there is flexibility at every scale.
- Small accent garlands (6–8 feet): Work well for a single 4-foot number, a short phrase like “I DO” or “JOY,” or adding an accent to one side of a 7-foot initial.
- Partial garlands (10–14 feet): Can work well over a 4-foot graduation setup or sweep diagonally across part of a larger marquee display.
- Full-display garlands (16–22 feet): Frame a larger portion of the letters, such as a birthday phrase or larger event display. Mixing balloon sizes helps the garland look fuller without making it feel too heavy next to the letters.
- Larger garlands (24+ feet): Can work for longer phrases, multi-line displays or larger balloon installations where the balloons are meant to be a major part of the backdrop.
Those ranges are a starting point, not a rule for every setup.
We also look at ceiling height, available floor space, where guests will stand for photos and whether you want a smaller balloon accent or a much fuller design.
That’s why we customize the garland length, shape and color scheme during the quoting process instead of using the same setup for every event.
Balloon Décor for 4-Foot vs. 7-Foot Marquee Letters
We plan balloons differently around our 4ft and 7ft letters because the scale changes quite a bit.
The size of the letters, ceiling clearance and how close guests will stand to the display all affect how much balloon décor makes sense.
We also usually mix balloon sizes so the garland looks full without feeling too heavy next to the marquee letters.
4ft Letter Balloon Garland Ideas
Our 4ft letters and numbers give us a little more room to play with balloons, especially for longer phrases and smaller venues.
They’re especially popular for birthday marquee numbers, milestone anniversaries and kids’ parties in homes, restaurants and smaller event spaces.
A 4ft letter balloon garland can work really well when you want the balloons and letters to feel like one backdrop without taking over the room.
For a birthday, we may put balloons along one side of a 30, 40 or 50 instead of completely surrounding the numbers.
That keeps the marquee numbers easy to see and still gives guests room to stand beside the display for photos.
Balloon bouquets and organic balloon garlands can both work around these smaller displays.
For baby showers, softer colors or neutrals can be paired with baby shower marquee letters without making the setup feel too busy.
Our 4ft letters can also be used in approved two-row layouts.
When balloons are part of the setup, we plan the entire layout ahead of time so we’re not trying to squeeze a garland into whatever space is left after the letters are already installed.

7ft Letter Balloon Garland Ideas
Our 7ft marquee letters are already a big statement, so the balloons usually don’t need to wrap around the entire display.
A 7ft letter balloon garland may come across part of the letters or cascade down one side while still leaving the bulbs and shape of the letters visible.
These larger setups work especially well for wedding marquee letters, corporate events, school dances, graduations and nonprofit events.
For weddings, softer palettes such as ivory, champagne, blush and sage can work really well around the white letters.
Double-stuffed balloons can also be used when you’re trying to get closer to a specific wedding palette, school color or brand color.
We can coordinate balloon garlands with other décor elements such as silk florals, flower walls, backdrops and uplighting when the space calls for a more layered setup.
Glitter-infused balloons can also add a little extra detail for proms, dance floors, stage entrances or other events where a more glamorous look fits.
The biggest thing with 7ft letters is always space.
We need enough room for the letters themselves before we start adding balloons around or above them.
Indoor & Outdoor Setup Considerations for Balloon Installations and Letters
One of the first things we look at is where the letters are actually going.
A balloon and marquee setup that works easily in an open ballroom can feel crowded fast in a restaurant, historic venue or smaller event room.
Indoor and outdoor setups also come with different things we have to plan for.
Balloons can help frame a photo area, entrance or stage alongside our marquee letter rentals in Nashville, but they still need to leave enough room for guests, cords and the rest of the event setup.
Here are some of the things we look at before installation:
- Space and ceiling height: Our 7ft letters need more vertical clearance, especially when balloons are being added above or around them. Four-foot displays are usually easier to work into rooms with lower ceilings and tighter layouts.
- Power access: Our marquee letters use standard power. Balloon garlands should never block cords, outlets or safe walkways.
- Venue attachment rules: Some Nashville hotels, barns, ballrooms and other venues have restrictions on what can be attached to walls or ceilings. We want to know those rules before event day so we can plan around them.
- Setup time: Setup time depends on the number of letters, phrase length, balloon design and how easy it is to access the space.
- Outdoor conditions: Heat, direct sun and wind can all affect party balloons. Heavy rain, high winds or other unsafe conditions can also change whether the marquee display can stay in the planned location.
- Backup plan: Outdoor events should have an approved covered backup location available if weather conditions aren’t safe for the original setup.
Outdoor setups take a little more planning.
One thing we’ve found is that lighter balloon colors are usually a better choice when the display is going outside in direct sun. Darker colors tend to absorb more heat, so the color palette can make a difference in how the balloons behave during the event.
We look at the colors, where the sun will hit the display, whether there is shade available, the wind and the surface we’re setting up on.
We’d much rather work through those details ahead of time than find out during installation that the planned location isn’t going to work.
For weddings, our wedding décor checklist to save time covers some of the other details worth thinking about before event day.

How Much Does Balloon Décor with Marquee Letters Cost?
We don’t price every balloon-and-letter setup the same because they’re rarely the same.
A single birthday number with a smaller garland is a very different install from a long 7ft corporate display with balloons, lighting and additional décor.
A few things that affect the quote include:
- Whether you’re using 4ft or 7ft marquee letters
- The number of letters or numbers
- Balloon garland size and design
- Balloon colors and finishes
- Event location
- Venue access
- Setup requirements
- Rental duration
- Additional décor or lighting
Why Balloon Quality Matters
One thing people don’t always realize is how much professional-quality balloons actually cost.
Premium balloon brands such as Sempertex and Kalisan cost more than the basic balloons you may see in a party-store or online kit, but in our experience they’re worth it.
The colors are better, the finish is more consistent and they give us a much cleaner-looking garland.
That difference becomes even more noticeable when the balloons are sitting directly beside large white marquee letters and everything is going to be photographed up close.
Premium balloons can also give us more options when we’re trying to match a specific wedding palette, school color or company branding. Double-stuffing balloons can help us get even closer to certain colors when needed.
Every My Big Letters quote is based on the actual event rather than using one generic package or per-letter price that may not reflect what you’re building.
Delivery, professional setup and pickup are included in your customized quote so you can see the full cost before booking.
A 50% non-refundable deposit reserves your date, with the remaining balance due according to your rental agreement.
Real Balloon + Marquee-Letter Setups from Tennessee Events
This is where real setups tell the story better than a generic example ever could.
Two customers can both ask for balloons and marquee letters and end up with completely different displays.
When we’re planning these, we look at the whole setup — the phrase, room size, colors, photo angles and where guests will actually be standing.
That usually tells us more than simply deciding on a garland length first.
Anna’s Bat Mitzvah Balloon Installation
For Anna’s Bat Mitzvah, we went beyond a standard balloon garland and created a full setup using balloon chains and bobo balloons with string lights.
This was a good example of why we don’t treat every balloon display the same.
The balloons became part of the overall event design instead of just an accent around the marquee letters, and the string lights added another layer to the display once the room lighting came down.

LOCAL FINDS at The Factory at Franklin
For the LOCAL FINDS Williamson event at The Factory at Franklin, we used our 4ft marquee letters in a stacked display and paired them with balloon work done by My Big Letters.
This setup was a great way to show what our 4ft letters can do because guests could see the stacked layout and balloons together in person.
It also gave us a chance to showcase that we can handle more than just the letters. When it makes sense for the event, we can plan the balloon décor around the marquee display as part of the same setup.

Different Events Need Different Balloon Layouts
A birthday with one or two 4ft numbers may only need balloons concentrated around one side.
A wedding with initials might call for something softer and more minimal.
A school or corporate event may use stronger colors and a larger balloon installation because the display is sitting on a stage or in a much bigger room.

Common Balloon and Marquee Letter Setup Mistakes
Most balloon and marquee letter setup mistakes come down to scale, placement and planning.
These are also the kinds of things that are much easier to fix before event day than during setup.
Using Too Few Balloons
A small balloon cluster can disappear next to a large marquee display.
Some DIY balloon kits simply don’t include enough balloons to look proportional next to large letters.
That doesn’t mean every display needs a huge garland. It just means the balloon arrangement should make sense next to the size of the letters.
Using a mix of balloon sizes can help create fullness and depth without overcrowding the display.
Overinflating Balloons
More air doesn’t necessarily make the balloon arrangement look better.
Overfilled latex balloons are more likely to pop, especially when heat is involved.
The balloon size and inflation need to make sense for the actual conditions where the display is being installed.
Getting the Scale Wrong
This is probably one of the easiest mistakes to make when you’re looking at inspiration photos online.
A balloon garland that looks big on its own can suddenly look undersized once it’s sitting next to a long phrase or a row of 7ft letters.
We look at the total width and height of the marquee display before deciding how much balloon coverage makes sense.
Covering the Marquee Bulbs
We don’t want balloons sitting directly over the bulbs or hiding half of the letters.
The marquee letters should still look like marquee letters.
We keep the bulbs visible and use the balloon décor to frame the display instead.
Ignoring Venue Rules
This is another detail that can cause problems if nobody thinks about it until setup.
Some venues have very specific rules about attaching décor to walls, ceilings or other surfaces.
We plan around those requirements instead of assuming every balloon installation can be handled the same way.
Forgetting About Weather
Outdoor balloon décor always needs extra planning.
Heat, sunlight, wind and rain can all affect the setup, and our marquee letters also need safe weather conditions.
The balloon colors matter too. Lighter colors are generally a better choice for direct sun because darker balloons can absorb more heat.
Having a covered Plan B makes things much easier if the forecast changes.
Forgetting About Access
Access is one of those things people don’t always think about until event day.
Sometimes the biggest challenge isn’t the display itself — it’s getting everything through the venue and into the room.
Stairs, elevators, narrow doors, long hallways, steep slopes and the distance from parking to the setup area can all matter.
Send us the venue name, room name and any access information ahead of time so we can plan accordingly.

Frequently Asked Questions About Balloon Decorations with Marquee Letters
How do I know what size balloon garland I need?
It depends on the marquee letters you’re using, how many letters or numbers are in the display, the venue and how much balloon coverage you want.
Send us the phrase or numbers you’re considering along with your event details and any inspiration photos you have.
We can look at the entire setup and recommend a balloon arrangement that makes sense around the letters instead of automatically using the same size garland every time.
What does pricing usually look like?
Pricing depends on the letters or numbers you’re renting, the size and style of the balloon garland, event location, access requirements and any additional décor you’re adding.
Balloon quality also plays a role. Premium brands and specialty colors can cost more, especially when double-stuffing or a very specific color match is involved.
We provide a custom quote based on the actual event so you can see the complete cost before booking.
Can I use balloon decorations and marquee letters outdoors?
Yes, as long as the weather and setup conditions are safe.
Heat, direct sun and wind can affect balloon décor, while heavy rain or high winds can also affect whether the marquee letters can safely remain outside.
For balloons, lighter colors are usually a better choice when the display will be exposed to direct sun.
We require a backup plan for outdoor setups in case conditions change.
How far in advance should I book?
Our dates are first-come, first-served, so earlier is always better when you already know your event date.
Popular spring and fall weekends, weddings, school events and larger corporate events can book earlier than other dates.
Booking ahead also gives us more time to plan the balloon portion of the display instead of trying to make everything fit together at the last minute.
Can you match my event or brand colors?
Yes.
Send us your wedding palette, school colors, corporate colors or inspiration photos and we’ll plan the balloon colors around the rest of the event.
We can also talk through whether a premium balloon color or double-stuffed combination will get us closer to the exact shade you’re trying to match.
Options such as matte colors, double-stuffed balloons and other finishes give us more flexibility when matching a particular look.
Build Your Marquee-Letter & Balloon Display with My Big Letters
If you already know the phrase or numbers you want, that’s usually the best place to start.
From there, we can look at your venue, decide how the display will fit in the space and figure out how much balloon décor it actually needs.
Sometimes that means a larger organic balloon garland or balloon arch.
Sometimes a smaller balloon arrangement along one side is enough.
And sometimes the design calls for something completely different, like the balloon chains and lighted bobo balloons we used for Anna’s Bat Mitzvah.
We don’t add balloons just to add balloons. The goal is for the balloons and marquee letters to look like they were planned together from the beginning.
A lot of our balloon work is handled directly by My Big Letters, and when a project calls for a larger or more specialized installation, we can also bring in professional balloon partners we trust.
My Big Letters handles the design, delivery, professional setup and pickup so you don’t have to transport heavy letters or coordinate the marquee portion of the installation yourself.
We serve Nashville, Middle Tennessee and events across Tennessee with both 4ft and 7ft marquee letters.
Send us your event date, venue, phrase or numbers and a few inspiration photos. We’ll help you plan a marquee-letter and balloon setup that fits the space, works with the rest of your event and still keeps the letters at the center of the display.
